Chapter 24
A pair of uniformed patrolmen were the first to arrive on scene, followed soon after by an emergency medical team. Despite her own horror at the unfolding events, the always-efficient Monna had called 911, and the response had been remarkably prompt. After confirming that O'Malley was beyond care, the medical technicians had left the body for the police and examined the bump on Cindy's head declaring non-threatening. She was now gathered with Monna and a couple of the newspaper's stunned reporters in the staff conference down the hall from where the shooting occurred. Sgt. Farran had called the shooting into to Lt. Edwards, and had been told to wait for backup. Once the assigned homicide detectives had completed their questioning of Miss Decker, he was directed to bring her with him into the office. Until then, he'd chosen to stand guard outside the room where the distraught reporter waited, trying without much success to understand the events of the past half-hour.
"What happened to him?" Cindy whispered softly to no one in particular. "He tried to kill me?"
"He'd been under a lot of stress the past twenty-four hours," Monna said, her own eyes red. "His health was poor, something he tried to hide from you, but I knew of his frequent doctor visits. I believe you are right and he had a stroke. You can never tell how someone might react when that happens."
"He was my only family," Cindy said softly, the immensity of the loss still hard for her to comprehend. Without O'Malley both her personal and professional life would never be the same again.
She glanced outside the room at the sudden sound of loud voices, and was distressed to see a couple of plainclothes cops speaking with Ebrahim. One of them was a face she knew, the disagreeable Sgt. Martin who had been so difficult the night Greg Harris had been found murdered. Just what she needed.
She didn't know how she would have coped if it hadn't been for Ebrahim. He kept the antagonistic Martin in check, and made sure the detective remained professional, despite his obvious dislike for her. Clearly the unfriendly cop had remembered their past interactions. It took more than an hour before he consented to her departure, so long as she agreed to stop by the department and provide a formal signed statement of events. Farran explained to Martin they had already been directed by Lt. Edwards to go there once released from the shooting scene.
Ebrahim opened the door to his car for Cindy, who slid into the passenger seat with a sigh. He then placed her office laptop computer onto the back seat. She'd insisted on bringing it once he'd told her that until they were absolutely certain what the situation was, she wouldn't be going back to her condo. Then he circled around to the vehicle's trunk to retrieve something. Finally he slipped into the driver's seat next to the troubled reporter.
"What am I going to do?" she asked Ebrahim, not really expecting him to have any answers.
